MLEC Students Named Gates Millennium Scholars

2 of our students, Flavia Cuervo and Krisna Maddy, were named Gates Millennium Scholars. This year, there were over 52,000 applicants. The 2 of them were among the one,000 awarded Gates Scholarships.  Although both are heading to the Ivies on total merit scholarships, Gates provides them money for books and expenses too as covering the cost of their graduate and mail service graduate studies, including medical school and/or doctoral degrees. Congratulations Flavia and Krisna, and also to their Cambridge Academy leader and Journalism instructor, Ms. Neyda Borges!

Joshua Gibbs, a 10th grade Culinary Arts educatee, has been selected as a finalist in the Carnaval Miami Cooking Contest with his Barely Cooked Salmon with Leeks recipe.  The nominated recipes will be judged for start, 2d, and 3rd place on Thursday, February 20, at vi:15 p.m., at Winn-Dixie Supermarket, 8855 Coral Way. Two Win Silver Knight Awards Honorable Mention

Last night was the 55th Annual Silver Knight Awards. This year we had 13 phenomenal nominees representing Miami Lakes Educational Center. They demonstrate everything that is special and corking about our school and our academies. This year, MLEC was fortunate to accept two honorable mentions, Sandy Rodriguez and Crystal Serrano. They will each receive $500, a plaque, and volition exist featured in The Miami Herald in the coming days. They, and all of the nominees, credit our school and all of the wonderful teachers, kinesthesia and staff that have taught them, guided and molded them over the concluding four years. Ms. Barbara Calixte, a postsecondary Culinary Arts educatee entered the Carnaval Miami Cooking Contest held a local Winn Dixie Supermarket on Tuesday, February xix, 2013.  Her iiird place winning entry was an Orzo block topped with colossal shrimp and a lemon butter sauce.  Ms. Calixte will now compete for the yard prize on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Carnaval on the Mile.  She is featured (right) with her Culinary Arts Teacher, Chef Gary Spitnale. Our journalism students participated in the FIU'southward 39th annual Journalism 24-hour interval, Saturday, October 22.  Students from schools across the county are all invited to have part in conferences, workshops and competitions hosted by professional journalists, broadcasters and media and advice experts.

 This twelvemonth ane of our students, Iqra Ahmed, won get-go place in the On the Spot Writing contest.  She participated in a Q&A session with Gabriel Gabor, an International Communications Consultant for Major League Soccer / Soccer United Marketing, and and so had 35 minutes to write a news story.

Robotics Students Capture National Championship
April 19, 2010

This by weekend, the Miami Lakes Educational Center's (MLEC) own Team Jag Robotics participated in the 2010 National Championship in Downtown Miami, FL. Five robot teams from MLEC'south Cambridge Engineering Academy entered this event with iii spinning drums and two powered wedge robots. The consequence was a smashing success with the introduction of our new ninth class team   named  Sting WMD. Our all girls team who bulldoze and maintain the robot Sting'em  placed 2nd in the  National  Event  falling victim to  electronic problems in the event finally. Cheers of VICTORY to the Team of RATTLER 2 who won the national title title. Congratulations to our amazing Robotics students and to their teacher, Mr. Paul Kynerd!

Cisco Students Accept Top Three Places in State Competition

In October 2009, Cisco Systems Inc., launched a global networking competition for post-secondary enrolled in the Networking Academy Programme. Students from Universities, Community Colleges and Adult Centers around the world competed within their own theatre. There were three rounds of competition and through a procedure of elimination, produced beginning, second and third identify winners.

Miami Lakes Educational Center's Cisco Networking Academy is pleased to announce that out of four teams that competed, three emerged every bit winners. Nosotros took first, second and tertiary place in the State of Florida! Today, our first place winners volition be competing with other state winners for the national championship! Information technology will be administered on our campus near every bit a combination of theory and hands-on exam. Mr. Neil Eichelbaum documents Dachau
July 2, 2009

On a field trip to The S Florida Holocaust Documentation and Education Middle's Pupil Awareness Day, Mr. Eichelbaum met two men, George Katzman, a liberator of Dachau Concentration Camp, and Julius Eisenstein, a survivor from the camp, who inspired Eichelbaum to not only put on a student assembly with their presentations at MLEC, only to picture show information technology and make a documentary, "Dachau: Ii Perspectives," with students from his 9th class Globe History and 12th grade Economics and American Government classes. The  2009 County-broad Automotive test
December fifteen, 2008

The 2009 County-wide Automotive test results accept been calculated for twelfth course students.  Two or our students, Marcos Rodriguez and Randy Williams take scored loftier enough to qualify for the applied exam for Miami-Dade County Public Schools and volition compete with ii teams from Broward County.  The winning team of this practical test will exist eligible to compete at the Annual New York Auto Prove contest.  All costs associated with the trip to New York are paid by the South Florida Auto-Truck Dealers Association, and the winning team of that result is eligible to receive many awards including two Pontiac Solstice.

AP Scholar Awards

College Board has recognized the achievements of some of our students on AP exams.  Iii students obtained the AP Scholar with Stardom recognition and six obtained the AP Scholar  award.  The AP Scholar with Distinction accolade is granted to students who received an average form of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  The AP Scholar award is granted to students who received grades of 3 or college on three or more AP exams.

The accolade winners are listed beneath. An asterisk (*) by the student's name indicates that he/she graduated in 2008.

Victoria Melissa Morgan, a Miami Lakes Educational Center educatee, has won the Cambridge Scholar Award for her performance on 3 International Equally level field of study examinations.
